Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: 10 months later
The Galaxy S23 Ultra, as of December 2023, has left a lasting impression on me for its seemingly timeless nature. Even if someone were to inform me it was only released yesterday, my review would be just as enthusiastic as it was back in February. The recent updates to Android 14 and One UI 6 have certainly contributed to this, as has the unique S Pen and the impressive 10x optical zoom.
In the previous months, we have demonstrated the camera’s ability to capture stunning photos under skilled operation and the noticeable disparities between it and a less expensive model like the Samsung Galaxy A54. Revisiting it just underscored that its photographic prowess remains intact, even when juxtaposed with Apple’s latest iPhone 15 Pro Max. While the camera may not be flawless, its adaptability and proficiency in most scenarios will quickly overshadow any minor missteps.
Unparalleled Camera Capabilities
At the heart of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is its groundbreaking 200MP camera system. This sensor has the ability to combine 16 pixels into one, resulting in brighter and more detailed photos. Alternatively, you can choose to shoot in full 200MP mode, which grants you greater flexibility when it comes to cropping and reframing your images.
A Complete Package
While the camera may be the standout feature of this device, there are a number of other upgrades that make the Galaxy S23 Ultra truly shine:
- Sharper Front Camera: The front-facing camera has been upgraded to a 12MP sensor, ensuring that your selfies are always on point.
- Powerful Processor: This phone boasts an exclusive Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip designed specifically for Galaxy devices. With its fast graphics performance, it outperforms even the latest iPhone models.
- Enhanced Display: The display has been optimized for use with the S Pen, Samsung’s signature stylus. Whether you’re taking notes or creating digital artwork, this screen delivers a seamless experience.
A Worthy Competitor
In my extensive comparisons, I’ve found that the Galaxy S23 Ultra stands head and shoulders above its competitors in terms of camera performance. It surpasses even the highly acclaimed Pixel 7 Pro and holds its own against the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max. Furthermore, battery life has seen significant improvement, lasting over 13 hours on a single charge.
Is It Worth the Investment?
With all of these impressive features, you may be wondering whether the Galaxy S23 Ultra justifies its hefty price tag of $1,199. In my opinion, the answer is a resounding yes. This device not only represents the pinnacle of Android technology but also stands as a strong contender among all premium smartphones.
In early 2024, Samsung is set to replace the Galaxy S23 Ultra with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This impending switch might make potential buyers pause and question if investing in the S23 Ultra now is a wise move. Our advice would be to wait if possible, but don’t rule out the S23 Ultra if you’re not concerned about owning the newest model. It delivers an exceptional performance all around, and your decision to purchase it today will not be one of regret.
Now that you will have all the information you need, it’s time to decide whether the Galaxy S23 Ultra is the right choice for you. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review: Design
There are a couple of things you notice about the design of the Galaxy S23 Ultra right away. Here’s a breakdown of what stands out:
Camera Upgrade: Even Bigger Cameras
The cameras on the back of the Galaxy S23 Ultra are even bigger this time compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This means improved photography capabilities, especially in low-light conditions.
Flatter Display: More Comfortable S Pen Usage
The display is flatter on the S23 Ultra. While there’s still a gentle curve to the 6.8-inch panel, it has a slimmer curve with a flatter surface area. This makes using an S Pen a bit more comfortable, as it glides smoothly across the screen without any interruptions.
Premium Feel: The Curved Edge
Some people may prefer a completely flat design, but I personally think that the curve adds a slightly more premium feel when I hold the S23 Ultra in my hand. The only downside is that it can sometimes be difficult to tap on items with your finger on the edges of the display.
Enhanced Durability: Gorilla Glass Victus 2
Durability-wise, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is built to be tougher. It is the first phone to feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which offers better protection against scratches and drops for both the front and back of the device. In durability tests conducted by YouTuber JerryRigEverything, the Galaxy S23 Ultra performed well in terms of scratching and bending.
However, it’s still recommended to use one of the best Galaxy S23 Ultra cases to ensure maximum protection for your investment.
Color Options: Choose Your Style
In terms of colors, the Galaxy S23 Ultra comes in four options:
- Phantom Black
- Green
- Cream
- Lavender
Personally, I find the green color to be the most eye-catching among all the choices. The model I’m currently testing is in green. The lavender color is also quite nice, with its subtle and elegant look. Additionally, I appreciate that the design of the phone doesn’t easily attract fingerprints.
SIM Card Slot: Retained Feature
It’s worth mentioning that unlike the iPhone 14 Pro Max which doesn’t have a SIM card slot, the S23 Ultra still retains this feature and its slot is located at the bottom of the device.
Eco-Friendly Design: The Future of Tech
Samsung is promoting the eco-friendliness of the S23 Ultra’s design by incorporating more recycled materials in its construction. This includes using:
- Recycled discarded fishing nets for the S Pen inner cover and bottom speaker module
- Recycled water barrels for the side key and volume key
- Recycled aluminum for the SIM tray
Size and Weight: Familiar Dimensions
In terms of size, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is identical to its predecessor, the S22 Ultra. It weighs 8.2 ounces and has dimensions of 6.43 x 3.07 x 0.35 inches. However, it is slightly heavier compared to the S22 Ultra which weighed 8.08 ounces.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review: Display
The S23 Ultra has an impressive screen that rivals the best in the market. Despite only making small improvements from its previous model, Samsung has managed to deliver a fantastic viewing experience with this device.
A Stunning Display
The highlight of the S23 Ultra is its 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O screen. Here are some key features of this display:
- Adaptable 120Hz Refresh Rate: This screen can automatically adjust its refresh rate based on what you’re doing, ranging from as low as 1Hz to as high as 120Hz. This helps in conserving battery life during less demanding tasks and ensures smooth scrolling when needed.
- QHD+ Resolution: With a resolution of 3,088 by 1,440 pixels, the S23 Ultra offers sharp visuals and vibrant colors.
- Impressive Pixel Density: At 501 pixels per inch (ppi), this display delivers detailed images and text.
For comparison:
- The Pixel 7 Pro has a slightly higher pixel density of 512ppi.
- The iPhone 14 Pro Max, on the other hand, has a lower pixel density of 460ppi.
Variants with Different Sizes
Aside from the S23 Ultra’s large screen, Samsung also offers two smaller models:
- S23: Comes with a 6.1-inch display
- S23+: Features a 6.6-inch display
Both these variants share similar specifications with the S23 Ultra, including a refresh rate of 120Hz and FHD+ resolution (2,340 by 1,080 pixels).
Enhanced Brightness Levels
One area where the S23 Ultra shines is its brightness capability. The screen can reach brightness levels of up to:
- 1,200 nits in typical conditions
- 1,750 nits under peak outdoor brightness
This is a significant improvement from last year’s S22 Ultra, which had a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits. However, it falls slightly short compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s brightness levels of:
- 1,600 nits in typical conditions
- 2,000 nits under peak outdoor brightness
During a direct sunlight test alongside the iPhone version, the S23 Ultra appeared slightly less bright but still remained highly visible. It’s worth noting that the difference was minimal and wouldn’t give Apple a significant advantage in this aspect.
Customization Options
Samsung understands that everyone has different preferences when it comes to their smartphone display. That’s why they’ve provided various customization options for users to tailor their viewing experience. Here are some settings you can adjust:
- Resolution: Switch between QHD+, FHD+, and HD+ resolutions based on your preference for detail or battery conservation.
- Adaptive Brightness: Enable this feature to let your phone automatically adjust screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions.
- Blue Light Settings: Reduce eye strain by filtering out harmful blue light emissions.
- Color Profiles: Choose from different color profiles to find the one that best suits your visual preferences.
- Text and Icon Sizes: Increase or decrease the size of text and icons for better readability.
- Edge Panels and Navigation Bar: Customize these features for easier access to apps and navigation gestures.
- Touch Sensitivity: Adjust how sensitive the screen is to your touch inputs.
- Screen Savers: Personalize your phone by selecting different screen savers.
Subtle Interruption at the Top
One minor drawback of the S23 Ultra’s design is the presence of a selfie camera at the top of the screen. While it does cause a slight interruption in the display area, Samsung has managed to minimize this by making the gap between the screen and metal frame extremely thin. As a result, the interruption is hardly noticeable during regular usage.
A Worthy Competitor in Display Quality
In a market where flagship smartphones are constantly pushing boundaries in display technology, the S23 Ultra manages to hold its own against its main rivals. With its stunning visuals, adaptive refresh rate, and customizable settings, this device offers an excellent viewing experience that’s hard to beat.
So if you’re someone who values a top-notch screen on their smartphone, the S23 Ultra is definitely worth considering.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review: Camera Performance
The camera of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is truly exceptional. It boasts an impressive ISOCELL HP2 200MP sensor that captures images with outstanding detail and clarity, setting a new standard for mobile photography. Whether you’re taking pictures of landscapes, portraits, or close-up shots, this camera can handle it all.
Unparalleled Detail with the 200MP Sensor
One of the standout features of the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera is its high-resolution sensor. With a whopping 200 million pixels, this sensor allows you to capture photos with an incredible level of detail. Every tiny element in your shot will be preserved, giving you the freedom to zoom in or crop your photos without sacrificing quality.
Versatility with Telephoto Zoom Lenses
In addition to its impressive sensor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra also comes with two telephoto zoom lenses. These lenses offer optical zoom capabilities of 3x and 10x, allowing you to get closer to your subject without compromising image quality. Whether you’re photographing a distant landmark or a small object up close, these zoom lenses will come in handy.
Super Resolution Zoom for Extreme Close-Ups
But what if you need to go even further? That’s where the Super Resolution Zoom feature comes in. With this feature, you can digitally zoom in up to 100x while still maintaining decent image quality. Thanks to the power of artificial intelligence, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is able to enhance details and reduce noise even at extreme zoom levels. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities for capturing subjects that are far away or difficult to reach.
Impressive Photo Quality
When it comes to evaluating the photo quality produced by the Galaxy S23 Ultra, there are two key factors to consider:
- Color Accuracy: The colors in photos taken with this phone are vibrant and eye-catching. While it may slightly exaggerate reds and blues, the overall result is still visually appealing, especially on the phone’s high-resolution display.
- Level of Detail: With its 200MP sensor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra excels in capturing fine details. This means you can zoom in on specific areas of your photo or crop it extensively without losing sharpness.
A Comparison with Other Flagship Phones
How does the Galaxy S23 Ultra stack up against its competitors? Let’s take a look:
- The iPhone 14 Pro is known for its accurate color reproduction, making it a favorite among photographers who value true-to-life colors.
- On the other hand, the Google Pixel 7 Pro is praised for its computational photography capabilities, which enable it to produce stunning images through software processing.
- While both these phones have their strengths, the Galaxy S23 Ultra shines in terms of versatility and detail. Its powerful hardware allows it to deliver an imaging experience that often surpasses its rivals in various shooting situations.
A Treat for Video Enthusiasts
I’m really impressed with the versatile camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It’s excellent for taking photos, but what about videos? The Galaxy S23 Ultra can record in stunning 8K resolution at 24 frames-per-second (fps), or a more practical 4K at 60fps. Plus, it has several unique modes like slow-motion, Hyperlapse, and Portrait video.
Just keep in mind that higher resolution videos require more storage space. One minute of 8K video uses roughly 620MB, and 4K isn’t far behind at about 550MB per minute. If you frequently record at these high resolutions or take 200MP photos, you could quickly fill up the standard 256GB of storage. Consider upgrading to the 512GB model if you plan on capturing a lot of high-quality content.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review: Performance
The Galaxy S23 Ultra features a unique version of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen for Galaxy chip. Samsung assures that this processor can achieve even greater clock speed than the standard chip, reaching up to 3.36 GHz.
Samsung also boasts of having the quickest mobile graphics on a smartphone. Our numerous benchmarks for the Galaxy S23 Ultra have yielded impressive results, surpassing the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in terms of graphics.
Geekbench, which gauges CPU performance for single-core and multicore applications, shows that the Galaxy S23 easily outperforms the Galaxy S22 Ultra in both tests and the iPhone 14 in multicore but not single core. However, the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic remains the fastest.
Additionally, I found that the phone reacts quickly when switching between apps and entering or exiting open apps. The only delay I noticed was when trying to edit a 200MP photo in the Gallery app.
As for actual gameplay? Playing Apex Legends on it was an immersive experience with stunning graphics and highly responsive controls. Whether I was sliding down a hill to surprise an opponent or furiously firing at enemies, the S23 Ultra never lagged. Additionally, I didn’t notice any overheating even after playing continuously for half an hour.
It’s worth mentioning that the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a larger vapor cooling chamber than its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This means you can expect more reliable performance and less overheating. Because of these features, the Galaxy S23 Ultra could potentially be the best gaming phone on the market, even surpassing those specifically designed for gaming.

One UI 5.1 Software

With its impressive performance and feature-packed software, the Galaxy S23 Ultra truly showcases Samsung’s commitment to delivering a device that excels in both hardware and software aspects.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review: S Pen
As a key highlight of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the S Pen stands out as a truly multifunctional tool, bundled in for maximum productivity. This stylus isn’t just an afterthought accessory; it’s a core component of the Galaxy S23 Ultra experience, designed to enhance user interaction with the device.
Transforming Interaction with Your Phone
The S Pen offers an array of functions that extend beyond basic screen navigation. For creative minds, it transforms the phone into a canvas for sketching or note-taking. For productivity seekers, it becomes a tool for image clipping and translation. The instant translation feature is notably faster than Twitter’s own system, making language barriers less daunting.
Keeping the Legacy of Galaxy Note Alive
The legacy of the Galaxy Note series is kept alive with unique features supported by the S Pen on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Among these features are image and text clipping, which enable you to extract valuable information from webpages or documents with ease.
Smooth and Precise Writing Experience
In terms of responsiveness, Samsung hits the mark with the S Pen. Its swift reaction to touch input, coupled with effective palm rejection for lock-screen notes, significantly enhances usability. Whether you’re jotting down quick notes or crafting detailed sketches, the S Pen offers a smooth and precise writing experience.
While it may take some time to fully explore and unlock its potential, mastering the use of the S Pen can significantly boost your productivity levels. As part of your Galaxy S23 Ultra toolkit, it truly embodies the concept of multifunctionality in a smartphone.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra worth the money?
Here are some reasons why the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra stands out when it comes to value for your money:
- Advanced camera capabilities: The S23 Ultra features a groundbreaking 200MP camera sensor that allows you to capture stunning photos with incredible detail. It also has unmatched zoom functions, letting you get up close to your subjects without losing clarity.
